2nd Tales: Bringing War Time experience to life
War time experience’s is a new demonstration
designed for schools in particular, but would be equally suitable for
all types of audience both young and old alike. These workshops’ concentrate
on the wartime memories and experiences of ‘Life on the front’ and
the role of ‘Military Nurses’ in particular. Each one of
the workshops concentrates on specific points in the experiences of women
at war, equipped with many original artefacts and inherited heirlooms
together with excellent replica equipment.
One session may involve exploring the ‘medical field
bag’ of
the nurse, examine the original equipment used and discuss how she helped
and saved many soldiers’. In the HOME FRONT workshop,
children can look at how ration books and coupons were issued and used,
with participants’ trying on individual items of military uniform
or a gas mask, and learn what a vital service people performed for the
Second World War. Our cooks could teach you a war time recipe
using rationed food or maybe the evacuee day would inspire the
audience, with participants learning how children were led to safety
in the countryside, what they took and how they were lived. Riffle through
a small boy’s suitcase and look at his toys and clothes together
with his memories of his evacuation.
For the heritage display, we can erect the FDS (Field Dressing Station)
to demonstrate how the casualties were cared for, fresh from the front
line before being dispatched to the Field Hospital. Look at and handle
original military hospital equipment and learn what vital role nurses
played in the D-Day operations. Alternatively for a larger display, the
NAAFI could come and serve war time food and lashings of tea to the public,
and discuss what living in war time Britain was really like with the
food shortages, see the rations, try on gas masks and much more.
In Association with Circle of Friends WW2 Living History Group for Larger Demonstrations of the NAAFI/Emergency Shelter.
